How Opening Up My World to a Case Worker Changed My Life

“No matter how successful you are, how much money you have — everybody needs somebody.” Every weekday, India Brown can be found at the St. Vincent de Paul thrift distribution center in Cool Valley, processing donations and sorting and pricing items with coworkers she calls her second family.
It wasn’t long ago that India’s connection to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul looked very different — she was receiving thrift store vouchers and utility assistance. She and her family later became one of the households that graduated from Pathways to Progress, a joint program of Catholic Charities of St. Louis and St. Francis Community Services.
Working with member advisers over multiple years, India was able to get her driver’s license reinstated, find better housingng for her family, stabilize her finances, and secure steady employment. The regular one-on-one support and practical classes on budgeting, credit, resume-building, and parenting made all the difference.
Now that she no longer feels trapped in constant crisis mode, India has turned outward — supporting her kids, passing on what she learned, and helping others who are struggling. Her story is a picture of what long-term, wraparound support can do.
